Saturday night K23 hosted yet another highly selective show just north of downtown with Pearl Charles, Annabelle Chairlegs, and Mockingbird Express. The Mustachio Light Show really tied the room together with their lighting and visuals. The Mustachio Light Show provides stage design and visual artist coordination for the Levitation Festival in Austin. Saturday night, they used a combination of a reel-to-reel, overhead projector lamps, even an old school surveillance camera pointing at an 80s CRT television with an 8-bit K23 on the screen.
Lindsey Mackin, the lead singer of Annabelle Chairlegs, is a rock star the way Patti Smith or the Velvet Underground is punk. Mackin's energy and command of the stage was hypnotizing and magnetic. Annabelle Chairlegs' desert surf meets pop-psych has an undeniably southern edge, much like the rest of the night. San Antonio's Mockingbird Express also rocked the southern psych with a bit of classic rock grit, leadsinger Marc Smith is a true frontman. Maybe it was the late hour, but Pearl Charles' demeanor was smooth and collected. The feel and sound of Pearl Charles' performance Saturday night was like a blurry dream taking place inside a sepia colored bar in the south somewhere. The slide guitar put a distinctly Americana spin on a shoegaze lost in the 60s. Once again K23 nailed the vibe with good beer from San Antonio's Ranger Creek and unique and interesting talent.
