Miscellaneous Music Events You Don’t Want to Miss this Month

There are various ways to enjoy music here in SA, if you’re looking for a change from the bar venue scene or looking for something you can do with the family, there's something for everyone. From musicals about historic significance of different genres of music to viewing parties to cinematic sing-a-long experiences, there are many ways to incorporate music into your life for the month of May.

'Memphis' at Woodlawn Theatre April 8 - May 8

This weekend might be your last chance to catch ‘Memphis’ at the Woodlawn Theatre. A story about two upcoming musicians and lovers, DJ Huey Calhoun (loosely based off of popular DJ Dewey Phillips) and Felicia Farrell that takes place in the Tennessee city of, you guessed it, Memphis in the 1950s. The play gives us incite as to how rock n’ roll was born and the seedy life in night clubs, radio stations and recording studios.

'Motown the Musical' at the Majestic Theater May 4 - 8

Starting today, Majestic Empire Theater will be housing ‘Motown the Musical’ for a four day stint. The musical follows the story of Motown founder Berry Gordy and his journey from featherweight boxer to the heavyweight music mogul who helped launch the careers of Motowns biggest and brightest that have been household names for generations such as Diana Ross, Michael Jackson and Smokey Robinson. “Motown shattered barriers, shaped our lives and made us all move to the same beat,” the press release stated. This musical features classic songs such as “My Girl” and “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” and over 40 of the most beloved Motown classics.

The Legend of Zelda: Symphony of the Goddesses at the Majestic Theater May 21

Something truly unique and worth the time. Somewhat along the lines of Pink Floyd’s laser light shows, this Symphony plays the music from the entire beloved video game franchise: Legend of Zelda. The experience is enhanced by paring the music with visuals from the 29 year old video game itself.

‘SGT. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’ Screening at the Tobin Center River Walk Plaza May 13

An perfect event for a family, outside in front of a giant LED screen where you can bring blankets and laying out. This rock opera tells the story of a band as they wrangle with the music industry and battle evil forces bent on stealing their instruments and corrupting their home town of Heartland. Staring various musical legends such as: Peter Frampton, The Bee Gees, George Burns, Steve Martin, Alice Cooper, Aerosmith.

The Lemonade Stand at the Paper Tiger May 12

Beyoncé broke records this past week with the release of her second visual album LEMONADE. Originally airing on HBO, LEMONADE has slowly leaked online for the enjoyment of everyone but the album has only been available to TIDAL users. Get your lyrics and hair flips down because the Paper Tiger will be showing the entire hour long visual 'masterpiece' and will have DJs spinning all the best Beyonce songs and yes, lemonade will be on tap.

Spice World Sing Along at the Alamo Draft House May 15

Every young pre-teen girl in the late 90's favorite movie never gets old and the Alamo Drafthouse Park North is having a huge sing a long and dance party to spice up your Sunday.  "At this interactive screening, we invite you to slam your body down and wind it all around while singing along with everyone's favorite Saturday Night Divas.
