San Antonio's latest new music venue is set to open Tuesday, August 23 at the Historic Pearl. Jazz, TX will have a week long celebration, featuring music by Doc Watkins and his orchestra August 23 through August 27. From a press release this morning:
“We are so thrilled to be opening and finally getting to share this with San Antonio. Lying at the crossroads of many cultures, San Antonio has always been a town where various music traditions come together. This rich history sets the scene for a club where jazz meets Texas and for what promises to be a unique experience.”
Doc Watkins is a local pianist, singer, bandleader, and composer, and has recorded six albums in his career so far. As San Antonio’s live music industry experiences a revival, Doc Watkins is one of the driving forces behind the resurgence.
“We are so excited for this new venue’s arrival at Pearl, as it will add even more vibrancy to our live music offerings,” said Elizabeth Fauerso, chief marketing officer at Pearl. “We worked with Doc Watkins in curating our Summer Dance Hall Series and are delighted to have him in our neighborhood on a more permanent basis, bringing authentic, diverse music to the community.”
The 3,500-square-foot venue is located in the basement of the original Bottling Department at Pearl, and is a mix of an upscale jazz club with the grit of a traditional Texas dancehall. The hours for opening week (August 23 – 27) will be Tuesday through Saturday from 7 p.m. to 12 a.m. Starting on August 30, the venue’s hours will be Tuesday through Thursday from 5 p.m. to 12 a.m., and Friday throughSaturday from 5 p.m. to 2 a.m. Tickets for opening week are $50 per person and can be purchased at jazztx.com.
