Top 5 Must See Acts at Maverick Music Festival

This year's Maverick Music Festival hit us with the headliner announcement followed by another bash to our musical brains by releasing a dope full lineup. Stacked with an array of up-and-comers, legends, regional bands, hip-hop, indie, electro, the 2016 downtown music festival could be the #1 music event in San Antonio this year. Word 'round campfire is that Public Enemy puts on a real badass live performance and The Flaming Lips' stage shenanigans and over the top live productions are pretty well documented. But besides the major headliners, here are 5 other artists San Antonio should NOT MISS this weekend. - full schedule below.

One of the groups we’re incredibly excited about is the U.K.’s Young Fathers. Their US performance debut was at SXSW in 2013 and in 2014 they won the coveted Mercury Prize for Dead, beating out FKA Twigs and Royal Blood. Their music is a mixture of R&B and hip-hop with rock influenced electronic music. Touring with Massive Attack is a perfect fit. The music that accompanies their wide-ranging vocal styles is as diverse as the legendary electronic group. For Young Fathers to be performing at La Villita is mind blowing, they go on the Main Stage at 7pm on Saturday. Do. Not. Miss. Young Fathers.

The Octopus Project

All the way from Austin, Tejas, it's possible many of you have seen The Octopus Project - but for those who have not - The Octopus Project are fun, energetic and interesting to watch. Their music ranges from soundscapes with a punk edge to singable electro-pop. I fell in love with the band back in '07 with the release of their full length album Hello, Avalanche and have been listening ever since. They take to the Arneson on Saturday night.

Reverend Horton Heat

"YOU WANNA KNOW WHAT IT IS??!?" When we said "legends," we weren't just referring to Chuck D or The Flaming Lips, psychobilly pioneers Reverend Horton Heat have been a strong influence on many since forming in the late 80s. No stranger to San Antonio stages, Reverend Horton Heat returns to the Alamo City this Saturday.

Alyson Alonzo

There's a common complaint about San Antonio music that not enough great musicians come out of here to make the national stage. This Friday evening, do not miss your opportunity to witness another moving performance by SA's own Alyson Alonzo. Her stage presence, texture of voice, and beautiful song writing capabilities all lay the foundation for one of our city's most talented artists to build a long lasting national career.

The Hawks (of Holy Rosary)

The Hawks (of Holy Rosary) reunite after a short hiatus this Saturday at the historic Arneson River Theatre. Equipped with their innate sense of humor, The Hawks bring energy and fun to the stage yet their song craft is anything but a joke. The melodious punk rock group led by Chuck Hernandez and Frank Weysos went on tour last year with Dr. Dog and performed for audiences all over the states.
